NUNOUS

Traditional shape

An original material created from discarded cloth.

Japan is renowned for its world-class manufacturing, however a negative consequence is the high number of out-of-spec products which are rejected due to stringent quality checks.
NUNOUS is an all-new upcycled material created by Seishoku, a material dyeing and processing company in Okayama. It is made by laminating and slicing large quantities of fabrics which were rejected as out-of-spec products, due to the smallest scratch or stain, or the most imperceptible color difference. This is Knot’s first strap in the SUSTINO series, utilizing next-generation materials to create elegant, unique patterns that resemble natural wood grain.

Even more beautiful than the original material.
An obsession for upcycling.

It has to be beautiful. Our goal is to produce materials through upcycling which are even more beautiful than their original form. NUNOUS has been developed with this in mind, and has such a high quality finish that it is hard to believe it originated from a material which would otherwise have been discarded. Although the materials have a low environmental impact, the product must first and foremost be beautiful. The NUNOUS straps were born out of the discovery of an extraordinary material, in keeping with Knot’s approach to product development.

Repurposed material
in its most beautiful form

Japan has extremely elevated standards for textiles and produces exceptionally high-quality products, but this leaves behind a large amount of “out-of-spec” material which does not meet those standards. This is estimated to be over 9 million meters in Japan alone each year (at 45cm in width, this would be enough material to wrap around the entire circumference of the Earth). NUNOUS is created from that invisible mass of discarded cloth, which is laminated, crimped and sliced using specialist techniques, producing a brand new upcycled material.

Every pattern
is entirely unique

The pattern on each slice of material is one of a kind, and no two will ever be the same. The slight warping effect that occurs during the lamination process gives the fabric a completely individual pattern, resembling that of wood grain. The end result is so impressive, that it is hard to imagine it could emerge from an artificially produced fabric.

Six color variations

When laminating out-of-spec materials, the finish will be completely different depending on the colors used to layer the fabric. Although no two NUNOUS materials will ever be the same, six color variations are achieved by laminating fabrics of similar colors.
