Founded in 1947, Preserving Tradition While Pioneering the Future of Wood.

Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Taniguchi Co. Ltd. is a woodworking manufacturer with approximately 60% of the domestic market share for goke – bowls used for stone counters when playing the board game Go.
The techniques they have cultivated over decades have supported Japan’s traditional crafts. Yet rather than remaining rooted in tradition alone, the company continues to question what wood can become in the future. Through repeated trial and refinement, this pursuit led to the development of “sewable wood” – an innovative material that, while made from natural wood, is flexible enough to bend and even be stitched.
“What remains unchanged is the artisan’s skill. What must evolve is the future of making.” True to these words, Taniguchi continues to expand the possibilities of wood, balancing tradition and innovation.

The technique remains, but ideas evolve.
Wood can be this free.

Within wood lie expressions yet to be discovered.
