Taniguchi Co. Ltd.’s “Sewable Wood”
For over 70 years since its founding on the Noto Peninsula, Taniguchi Co. Ltd. has continued to craft wooden products. After 10 years of development, “sewable wood” was born: a material that, despite being wood, is flexible enough to be folded, yet retains its strength.
The wood is sliced into thin sheets using specialized machinery, so thin that light can pass through them. When freshly carved, the cherry wood carries a faint natural fragrance.
The timber used is sustainably sourced from thinned wood, reflecting consideration for the environment.
Born from the pursuit of President Taniguchi and refined over a decade, “sewable wood” is a new material created by slicing wood to just 0.12–0.15mm and applying specialized processing, lending it the flexibility to be stitched with a needle. Embracing this thinness, it has now been transformed into a natural wood dial.
