Tatami-beri strap
Wear a piece of Japanese living.
A strap that brings the colors and grace of Japanese craft to your wrist.
Tatami-beri, the woven edging adorning tatami mats, has long refined Japanese living spaces and conveyed a sense of formality. Within those woven borders lives a distinctly Japanese aesthetic: subtle, understated, yet capable of beautifully defining and elevating a space.

Tatami – the defining material of the Japanese home
Tatami is one of Japan’s most iconic traditional materials.
Soft underfoot, quietly fragrant, and bringing a calm dignity to any room, tatami has been a beloved part of Japanese life for centuries.
Both functional and beautiful, it is woven deeply into the Japanese way of living.

Tatami-beri – the fabric at the edge of the mat
Tatami-beri is more than decoration.
While it protects the mat itself, it also shapes the mood of a room through its colors and patterns – reflecting the taste and sensibility of the people who live there. It is a uniquely Japanese textile tradition.
Bringing an everyday textile into everyday style.

This strap is crafted by Takata Orimono Co. Ltd., based in Kojima, Okayama – one of Japan’s leading tatami-beri manufacturers, holding a significant share of the domestic market.
Tatami-beri is a woven tradition that has beautifully framed tatami while bringing quiet refinement to everyday living.
While preserving traditional patterns, Takata Orimono continues to create new colors and designs that naturally fit contemporary lifestyles.
Evolving tradition for the way we live now
Tradition doesn’t survive by standing still; it endures when it finds its way into everyday life, into the things people choose to wear and use each day.
For this tatami-beri strap, we moved away from overtly “Japanese pattern” aesthetics, instead embracing muted tones and minimal solid colors that blend naturally into contemporary fashion.
By doing so, tradition becomes not something reserved for special occasions, but part of your everyday wardrobe.

Rather than leaning into a boldly traditional look, the design of this strap was guided by wearability – pieces that integrate naturally into your existing wardrobe.
Soft, muted tones, and minimal solid colors.
Comfortably suited to both business and casual wear, the straps add understated individuality to even the simplest outfit.
Lighter than leather, and softer than metal, the tatami-beri strap makes a subtly memorable impression.
The right strap changes the whole look
Explore the full collection of five colorways: two clean, stylish stripe patterns, and three playful yet refined monogram patterns. On our “Customize” page or at our gallery shops across Japan, you can find the combination that feels just right for you.

Two stripe patterns, simple yet stylish

The interplay of light and shadow in the weave gives the strap a sense of visual depth, adding a touch of character to the wrist.
Built around a base of calm black and navy tones, it transitions effortlessly between professional and casual settings – an easy choice for everyday wear.
The strap retains the texture of traditional weaving while blending seamlessly into modern style.

Three monogram colorways: playful, charming, and refined

The monogram pattern brings a more contemporary expression to the character of tatami-beri. A rhythmic geometric motif, rendered in pink, light green, and dark brown, strikes a balance between traditional Japanese sensibility and a modern, lively aesthetic.
The straps are a great choice for anyone looking to add a touch of personality and playfulness to a familiar watch, or a distinctive accent to their everyday look.
This pattern is a reinterpretation of the ancient hishi (diamond) motif – a geometric form built from continuously repeating rhombus shapes. Long celebrated as an auspicious symbol, the diamond motif has historically carried meanings of prosperity and good health, and has been part of Japanese life for generations.
Tatami-beri may bring to mind the calm atmosphere of a traditional Japanese room,
but today’s tatami-beri is vibrant, versatile, and increasingly used in bags, accessories, and other everyday items.
Scotchgard™ Water-Protected Leather Lining
Beyond the beauty of the material itself, functionality was carefully considered to make this a strap suited for daily wear.
The easy lever, loop, and lining are all made with water-resistant leather. This helps accommodate everyday exposure to moisture, from warm weather and perspiration to handwashing and daily use.
By combining the lightweight texture unique to tatami-beri with the practicality of water-resistant leather, the strap achieves both fresh visual character and everyday usability.
A traditional Japanese material, made easy to wear without requiring delicate handling, and naturally fitting into modern daily styling.
Traditional tatami-beri patterns, reimagined
-
This strap features two of the most classic motifs found in tatami-beri weaving: the traditional diamond pattern (hishi) – one of the most standard design used in tatami-beri textiles – and a lattice pattern inspired by namako walls, found throughout the samurai residences of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. These designs carry a sense of story, rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics while evoking the heritage of Kurashiki, Okayama.
-
The backing is made from premium Tochigi leather. By wrapping the edges in leather, the strap is finished cleanly and the tatami-beri fabric is secured against fraying. Each detail is finished along horizontal and vertical lines, in keeping with the craft of tatami itself.

Recommended for those who want to express their individuality with understated refinement, or for those seeking a product that embodies Japanese traditional culture.
